City Campground in Midst of $14 Million Renovation

New extreme destination is sure to attract visitors and economic development to the City

Task by task, the City’s quest to create a world-class recreational destination at its city-owned beachfront campground is progressing daily with the opening targeted for the year’s end.

The goal is to transform the City’s outdated, underused campground, known as La Laguna Resort & Boat Launch, on the lake’s scenic northwest shore into a state-of-the-art recreational destination offering a variety of options for camping that appeals to anyone seeking to get away and enjoy lakefront fun.

Surrounded by mountains, the City’s namesake 3,000-surface-acre lake is the largest natural freshwater body in Southern California.

When completed, the $14 million makeover promises to offer an innovative setting with more than 235 RV spaces including full hookups and a variety of other ways to stay and play. The City expects revenues generated by the campground’s uses will easily cover rehabilitation costs within a few years.

Other camping options will consist of customized vintage trailers and yurts — cylindrical tents based on the designs of the portable structures that Mongolians and other nomadic Asian cultures used for centuries. Yurts could be available for the public to rent as soon as March.

Also, now open at the resort is an RV and Boat Storage Facility that offers rental spaces to meet the growing demand for such facilities and will immediately begin providing revenue to the city.

Improvements completed to date on the 47-acre campground improvement area include the group camping area, sewer and water utilities, and a maintenance building. Construction of an A-frame community hall is underway. Upcoming work will also include the creation of a new entrance aligned with Lincoln Street, which empties onto Riverside Drive.

The impetus for the campground overhaul came from the City’s completion of a new, beautiful boat launch and beach in 2012. This $8.7 million project escalated the City’s interest in maximizing the potential of the total 85-acre property.

The campground and original boat launch were installed by the state in the 1960s. The City inherited the property from the state in 1993 and renamed it the Lake Recreation Area. Upon completion of the new boat launch and beach in 2012, the City renamed the locale to La Laguna Resort & Boat Launch.

La Laguna was one of the terms used to refer to the lake in the decades leading up to cityhood in 1888 when the city’s founders named the new municipality Elsinore. In the early 1970s, the City added “Lake” to the title to put more emphasis on the City’s dominant geographical feature.

When the completely rehabilitated campground resort opens, the City will once again rename the property Launch Pointe Recreation Destination & RV Park. This strategically allows the City to market and reintroduce the campground as the only Southern California destination that provides the ultimate experience on the largest natural freshwater lake for families and outdoor enthusiasts who want to create amazing stories and lasting memories. The name was determined after an extensive branding process over the last year with a professional consultant. The name is intended to corroborate the city’s “Dream Extreme” identification brand and its reputation as a mecca for adventurous outdoor sports activities such as high-speed boating, off-road racing, skydiving and hang-gliding.

Stay tuned for more information as this project progresses.
