Chief Cleary will leave Lake Elsinore to work under Sheriff Stan Sniff
Sheriff Stanley Sniff has promoted Lake Elsinore Police Captain Joseph Cleary to the rank of Chief Deputy, it was announced during a meeting of the City Council on Tuesday.
His appointment in Riverside is effective immediately, though the name of Cleary's successor at Lake Elsinore has not yet been publicized.
Cleary has serve as chief of police for the City of Lake Elsinore since September 2008.
While serving as commander of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's station, Cleary was concurrently serving as chief of police for the one of the County's newest cities, Wildomar.
Cleary has worked a variety of assignments with the Sheriff's Patrol and Corrections divisions. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2003 and managed the patrol, investigations, the school resource unit, the county hospital unit and the police department's administration. He was promoted to Captain in 2008.
Chief Deputy Cleary holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from the California State University San Bernardino and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy, Quantico, Virginia.
