Mayor Natasha Johnson in Washington, DC to Meet with President Trump Regarding SB 54

Last week, Mayor Natasha Johnson was invited amongst a select group of dignitaries to meet with President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions for an intimate round table discussion regarding California’s Sanctuary State Bill - SB 54.

The City and Mayor Johnson were selected among 15 to 20 other representatives from cities and counties throughout Southern California that have been early adopters in taking a position against SB 54. The meeting will be held today, Wednesday, May 16, at 3:00 pm in the West Wing of the White House.

Each representative will have an opportunity to share a few words about what their community has done and why, followed by a discussion about next steps.

“It is truly an honor to have this opportunity to meet President Trump and a privilege as the Mayor to represent the City of Lake Elsinore,” said Mayor Natasha Johnson. “Safety is our top priority, so I look forward to discussing our options and next steps as we navigate and address issues related to SB 54.”

On April 24, 2018, the City Council unanimously adopted a resolution opposing SB 54, the California Values Act, that restricts law enforcement and endangers public safety.

The reasons cited for this decision included:

  • Public Safety is Our Top Priority – The City opposing any measures that threaten this basic community value and City responsibility. The City is committed to doing our best to protect our community.
  • Restricts Critical Collaboration Amongst Law Enforcement Agencies – State of California has restricted the discretion and the ability of law enforcement agencies in California to cooperate with federal law enforcement about immigration violations of arrestees and inmates. This means more criminals will stay on our streets and it greatly limits the availability of information for use in immigration enforcement activities.
  • Best Step for Contract City – The City is limited in our next steps since we are a contract City with Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The City’s police force follows the law enforcement procedures that are developed and implemented by the County Sheriff. But, it felt strongly that we needed to take a formal position to assure our citizens that we do not support the actions of our State.

“Ultimately, SB 54 is unconstitutional and directly affects the public safety of our community and state,” said Mayor Johnson. “I look forward to learning more for my fellow Southern California dignitaries and, of course, President Trump about ways to collaborate together and address issues created by SB 54.”

The Mayor will make a public update at the next City Council meeting on June 12, 2018.
