The CAT program was designed to match volunteers in roles that harness their talents, skills and abilities with the needs of the City. Our goal is to expand volunteer involvement in ways that can increase public safety and promote civic pride.

CAT Program Goals

1. Expand the City's ability to respond to public safety needs, such as disasters of all kinds;
2. Protect against illegal acts, including vandalism and graffiti;
3. Keep the City and Lake clean through beautification efforts, such as watershed cleanup days;
4. Strengthen community wellbeing & trust through proactive crime prevention activities;
5. Engage volunteers in the City's mission, values and vision, by recruiting, organizing and training a strong volunteer force.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out about volunteer openings?

CAT program volunteer openings will be posted on the City's Jobs Web page, as openings or recruitments occur. In addition, by signing up for the City's e-subscribe feature, subscribers will receive automatic notification via email when volunteer positions need to be filled.

How do I apply as a volunteer?

Application materials are available for download and may be signed and returned to the Human Resource Department for processing.

Does the City require background screening for volunteer applicants?

Background screening requirements are disclosed on City volunteer application forms in accordance with the City's volunteer policy (PDF 281KB). The City requires background screening for many, but not all, volunteer positions. Background screening is a mandatory requirement for volunteer positions that involve working with minors, working with confidential information, or handling cash or financial records; see the volunteer policy for more information about background screening criteria.

What is the minimum age for a child or youth volunteer?

Youth and children of all ages are welcome when accompanied by their parents or legal guardian(s) at designated "family-friendly" volunteer events and activities. For all other volunteer programs, the minimum age for youth to participate is 14, provided an adult or legal guardian accompanies their child during the event. Youth between the ages of 15-17 do not require an adult or guardian to be present.

The CAT volunteer program is a gateway to all City volunteer programs. While individual departments can answer specific questions about volunteer activities they sponsor, the City's Human Resources Department should be the starting point for questions about volunteer recruitment procedures, volunteer policies and background screening, among other volunteer related inquiries.
